Sharon Dougherty
Artist's
Statement
"I aspire to create atmospheres which evoke an emotional response in the viewer, I have a passion for themes grounded in nature, where light and color unite. The layers of paint help create rich surfaces which entice the viewer to look further at my work.
Artists who have influenced me are Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, Cy Twombly, and Brice Marden. My kinship with these artists is that, like them, I am concerned with both the formal elements of painting and the spontaneous act of painting. The act of painting for me is a dance which relies on the energy of the artist. Once the
painter touches the canvas the dance begins."
