Woodie Long

Artist's Resume

Woodie Long (1942- ) the son of share croppers, grew up in public housing in Plant City, Florida, where he began painting houses and boats. Since picking up his wife's fine art brushes in 1988 he has sold over 9,500 paintings on paper, wood and tin. He has produced over 31 national magazines or book covers and is in many public collections including the House of Blues, New Orleans and Chicago, Birmingham National Airport, Hunter Museum of Art, Chattanooga, and the Strombecker Corp., Chicago. Private collectors include Tommy Lee Jones, Dan Ackroyd and Helen Hunt. Woodie's paintings are full of spontaneity and life in its most essential terms.

Woodie is one of a group of self-taught artists who make up one of the most vital spheres of 20th century art. The self-taught artist works outside both the academic and critical discourse of the rest of the art community.
Central themes seem to course through their work depicting deep emotion, religion, and inspirations for their lives
